2005-07-19 | Onyx signs 30-year investment, design, construction and operation Concession Agreement for a municipal waste landfill in Foshan, Guangdong Province, China

Onyx, the waste management division of Veolia Environnement, recently signed a 30-year investment, construction, and operation Concession Agreement with Foshan Municipality (Guangdong Province) for a municipal solid waste landfill.

The total contract value is estimated to be 270 million euros over the concession period.

Located on the suburb area of Foshan*, in the Gaoming Municipality, the landfill will have a capacity of 24 million cubic meters, and will be operated by Onyx in compliance with its international standards already applied in China at the municipal solid waste landfills of Laogang and Guangzhou: recovery of landfill gas generated by the fermentation of the waste and its use as a source of renewable energy, and collection and treatment of the leachate (liquid effluent that has passed through the waste mass).

After recently being awarded other contracts in Guangdong (design, build, and operate for 30 years the province's future hazardous waste treatment center) and Hong Kong (5-year waste treatment contract with Disneyland), winning the Foshan contract is a major and encouraging milestone for Onyx in the acquisition of further market share in China, especially in large, rapidly growing cities.

These recent contracts are confirmation of Onyx's leading position on the Chinese waste treatment market with its huge unsatisfied needs. Onyx operates municipal solid waste landfills with waste-to-energy systems and hazardous waste treatment facilities in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Huizhou, Hangzhou, Tianjin, Hong Kong and Macau.

In 2004, Onyx Asia' sales rose 10% to a total of 139 million euros.

* Foshan is the third largest city in Guangdong Province with a population of 5.6 million, and was ranked No.1 for economic development in the province in the first quarter of 2005.

Onyx, Veolia Environnement's waste management division, is the only operator that provides solid, liquid, non-hazardous and hazardous waste management solutions to both local communities and industry. Its 71,000 employees in 34 countries provide waste management and logistics services, including collection, wastewater management, cleaning and flow control, and treatment and recovery of waste.
